flashback

A flashback is an interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point the story has reached. A time-tunnel, an inner view, defocused and color altered by filmschool textbooks.
Memories and time-travel are themes in the film La Jetée by Chris Marker. A filmdirector who works within documentary and pseudo-documentary modes, they mimic the manner in which memory and desire flash from cell to cell – randomly, instantaneously, elliptically. When asked for a picture of himself, Chris Marker usually offers a photograph of a cat instead. His cat is named Guillaume.
